gtwrckd asked: What advice would you give someone (me) who is applying to art school intending to focus on/major in graphic design? Any portfolio tips?
First off, it makes me super excited that people reading this tumblr are aspiring designers/artists/photographers, etc. Here’s my portfolio/preparation advise:
Try to have a range of work that shows off your aesthetic sense, technical skill as well as your critical and conceptual thinking (just as important, if not more so.) Any sort of typographic work will show your seriousness and enthusiasm for design, as this is one major distinction from fine art. Experiment and do self-initiated work in addition to prior class assignments you may be including.
Unless it’s what you want, don’t go into design school expecting it to be a 2-4 year photoshop class. In that case, you’re not getting a design education at all.
